When it comes to wintertime reds, Amarone is right up there with the best of them. Made from grapes that have been air dried an average of 3-4 months, the resulting wines are heady, lush and packed with flavor. Ripasso is sometimes called Baby Amarone, made by refermenting regular Valpolicella with the grape must left after Amarone production. With similar flavors and a lower price these hit the sweet spot when you want rich but not like Bill Gates rich. We'll do some digging for best examples and have a list of wineries soon.
